About Marilyn Akerson-Corbitt

Artist Statement

I create art pieces of texture and color using materials at hand.

As a child, I was always busy drawing, painting, sewing, and building birdhouses in the barn. I developed a sense of using materials at hand (scraps) to create works of art. I spent hours and hours in my Mom’s 1acre flower garden filled with bugs, bees, butterflies, flowers, and foliages allowing me to experience nature’s unlimited colors and textures. This became the thread that would weave through my life.
In college, I majored in Textiles, Clothing & Design, where I learned the technical meaning of color and texture.

I then experienced real life color and rough texture in the corporate world while raising my son and putting him through college to get him on his way in life. Finally after loss of most of my family, marriage, home, And even my cat within a very short period of time, my talent for using materials at hand to create artwork with texture and color came through to envelope my life. Today I am blessed with a beautiful studio in which I seriously create mini masterpieces using materials at hand. Recycling has become a major part of my work. I use it in my weaving, fabric construction, designs, and embellishments for wearables and wall pieces I create.
